Web Services Delivered from the Cloud – (Communication-as-a-Service)

CaaS is an outsourced enterprise communications solution.

CaaS vendors provide these types of services and are responsible for the management of hardware and software required for delivering Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, Instant Messaging and Video Conferencing capabilities to their customers.

Web Services Delivered from the Cloud

A CaaS model allows a CaaS provider’s business customers to selectively deploy communications features and services throughout their company on a pay-as-you-go basis for service(s) used. CaaS is designed on a utility-like pricing model that provides users with comprehensive, flexible, and (usually) simple-to-understand service plans.

CaaS offers flexibility and scalability that small and medium-sized business might not otherwise be able to afford. CaaS service providers are usually prepared to handle peak loads for their customers by providing services capable of allowing more capacity, devices, modes or area coverage as their customer demand necessitates.

Network capacity and feature sets can be changed dynamically, so functionality keeps pace with consumer demand and provider-owned resources are not wasted.

CaaS requires little to no management oversight from customers. It eliminates the business customer’s need for any capital investment in infrastructure, and it eliminates expense for ongoing maintenance and operationsoverhead for infrastructure. With a CaaS solution, customers are able to leverage enterprise-class communication services without having to build a premises-based solution of their own. This allows those customers to reallocate budget and personnel resources to where their business can best use them.

SAP HANA Migration Made Easy Using Data Migration Option (DMO)

Migration to SAP HANA has been simplified using SAP SUM DMO tools:

As a prerequisite Migrating to SAP HANA database requires Source SAP environment to be in the Latest Enhancement Patch level(ex: EHP7). If Source SAP environment is on lower version of (ex: ECC EHP4) then this has to be Upgraded to SAP Latest Enhance patch before we perform Migration to SAP HANA.

HANA Blog

If we go with Classic Migration and Upgrade approach, this will lead to two Business downtime’s. One for SAP version upgrade to Latest Enhancement Patch level and another downtime for Migrating the database to SAP HANA.

Using SAP SUM tool with database migration option (DMO) will solve this problem performing Upgrade and Migration in step. Database Migration Option (DMO) is feature provided by SUM tool, which allows SAP Upgrade and Migration to HANA in one go.

Benefits Using SAP DMO option:

  • Migration steps are simplified as export/Import options are embedded within this DMO tool.
  • System upgrade, Unicode Conversion, and database migration are combined in one tool
  • Overall Business downtime is reduced using DMO
  • SAP DMO Option is general available with SUM SP09
  • Using DMO Option Unicode Conversion (single code pages) is supported with SUM SP10

System Prerequisites for DMO Migration:

  • Dual-Stack split – DMO works only with ABAP systems, so a dual-stack split may be required beforehand.
  • OS/DB: according to PAM with restriction – i5 not yet supported (“DB2 for IBM i” / “DB2 for IBM iSeries” / “DB2 for IBM i5/OS”)
  • Source release:
    • SAP ERP 6.0 or higher (e.g. EHP1, EHP2, EHP3)
    • Systems as part of SAP Business Suite 7 or higher (SAP ERP 6.0 EHP4, SAP CRM 7.0, SAP SCM 7.0, SAP SRM 7.0)
    • SAP SCM 7.0 is supported, but you have to manually migrate the live cache after migration as described in SAP Note 1825703
    • Systems based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (e.g. SAP ERP 6.0) need at least SP17 for software component SAP_BASIS
  • Target release: System based on SAP NetWeaver 7.4 and higher

Key Milestone

WFT Cloud was established in 2010 to provide more flexible and cost effective options for SAP customers. It is the first SAP certified cloud hosting and services partner. WFT Cloud runs out of data center in Philadelphia, PA that is SSAE 16 Type II certified and runs on state-of-the-art infrastructure. Its operations utilize best practices associated with SAP and Cloud computing to deliver highest standards in control, compliance and security and meet stringent SLAs for SAP customers. With partnership with Verizon Terremark, WFT Cloud also extends hosting solutions that require a secondary site or need more geographical diversity.

Typical use cases for WFT Cloud customers range from hosting and support of an entire SAP landscape with multiple environments to hybrid cloud solutions that deliver substantial cost efficiencies for non-production environments while keeping production infrastructure on-premise. Other scenarios include on-demand availability of project or sandbox environment for testing or development and POC type services for new technologies such as SAP HANA.

Depth of Expertise

WFT Cloud builds upon the extensive experience of WFT professionals that average over 20 years of experience with SAP infrastructure. Rather than being a generic “platform” provider, WFT provides access to depth of expertise and experience that is unparalleled in the industry. As such, it can provide meaningful insights into the intricacies of working with SAP and assist companies with development of SAP applications or maximize operational efficiencies.

One of the very first WFT Cloud customers, Jacob Chacko from Belgium commented “..the speed at which we were delivered a working SAP system was phenomenal, the response and technical expertise is unparalleled. It was a pleasant experience working with WFT Cloud and we wish we knew them earlier. I would definitely recommend them.”

This library, called SCIF (SAP Cloud Image Factory), allows WFT Cloud to bring up any landscape that is required for that particular solution in a matter of minutes and not days. This represents great flexibility and delivers efficiencies to WFT Cloud customers.

Mahesh Reddy, CTO of WFT Cloud further comments, “Customers around the world have realized the benefits of accelerated time to value because of the affordable, secure, scalable, and flexible SAP on Cloud solution that we offer. The bundled SAP BASIS support is a key differentiator which eliminates the need to maintain skilled in-house SAP professionals to manage the technical infrastructure hosting the SAP landscape.”

Cloud computing for corporations – Part 4 (Collaborating on Marketing Materials)

Moving over finance, Marketing is another area which could immensely benefit from Cloud enabled systems. Putting together a catalog requires data from several different departments. For example, effective direct mail campaign benefits from marketing, sales, and fulfillment input. Online PR needs participation from marketing, product, and technical staff.

Collaborating on Marketing Materials

Moreover, when it comes to creating marketing materials, usage of web based applications would be the best approach to comfortably collaborate between different departments and would also ensure proper and hassle free management of the supply chain system and personnel involved.

The required marketing materials, the cash needed for the same, and the approval or disapproval for the same from the management can all be logged into the same system and can be accessed anytime anywhere, thus reducing the time lag and also eliminating communication gap between various parties involved.

Cloud computing for corporations – Part 3 (Managing Financial Statements)

Cloud computing for corporations – Part 3 (Managing Financial Statements)

Once the decision has been made over the annual budget of the company at the beginning of the year, we also need to consolidate the Year End or Month End Financial Statements to measure what actually happened vis-à-vis the annual budget that was allocated at the beginning of the financial year. This could be done by assembling an year end profit or loss statement or income statement.

Managing Financial Statements

To assemble the Profit and Loss or Income Statement, the accounting and finance department needs final figures from all the relevant departments as soon as possible to ensure quick decisions to be taken from the management in lieu of the financial results for that year. However, this may involve lots of movements of emails within the relevant departments which may involve lots of time which could be saved by using a Cloud Based Accounting application.

Many a times, companies prefer the usage of web based master spreadsheet like Google to avoid excessive to-and-fro of emails within the departments, as each department can enter its data directly into the spreadsheet and the decision makers have all the information present to them real time.

However, an even smarter move could be the usage of a Cloud based Accounting application that would help in consolidation of all the data, analysis and subsequent report generation in the desirable format to the management. Not only will this application assist in the generation of various relevant accounting reports like balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement etc, but also, it will help reduce the headcount in the accounting department of the company as they will only need fewer employees to manage these applications rather than having a bigger workforce to assist in accounting tasks.
